Welcome to whatneildid.com

July 21, 2017 by Neil Thornton 1 Comment

OK, so here it is! whatneildid.com is live. It’s been a while in the making, but we’re here.

Why the change?

Those of you who have followed me from the start, you’ll know the blog has moved in a new direction. I had thought of changing the blog from thescienceofappearance.com a few times over the years. Though I did, and still do, love it, I chose the name in a different life when the blog had a different job to fulfill. Fast-forward almost seven years later and the blog isn’t the same, it’s moved beyond fashion into grooming and lifestyle, so I wanted to make a change that reflected this.

So what’s different about whatneildid.com?

Apart from a new look and feel, whatneildid.com (or WND for short) is going to feature a much wider scope of content, especially when it comes to lifestyle. One of the things I’m most proud of doing on here is talking about real-life situations that affect us all. The #MondayMotivation series, including the awesome opportunity to expand this into YouTube with Gillette, has given me a space to talk to you about things that guys deal with all the time, but may not ever feel they can discuss. It’s opened up so many conversation on social and I want to do more. I’m going to be working with some awesome people and brands to start talking about things that mean a lot to me; from men and mental health and LGBTQ issues to music, body image and fitness. But, of course, there’ll still be all the usual style and grooming in-between.

What about thescienceofappearance.com?

The Science of Appearance is on hiatus for now. I do have plans for it in the hopefully-not-so-distant future. But I will let you know nearer the time!

So that’s it! I can’t wait to start sharing new stories with you!

Sunday Sessions #1

by Neil Thornton 4 Comments

Welcome to the Sunday Sessions!

Music plays a huge part in my life and I have a playlist for almost everything I do; working out and the varieties within that, chilling out, bath time, commuting… the list goes on. So I figured I would share my favourite tunes with you. From my own playlists to playlists by others that I love and think you should check out! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

The debut Sunday Sessions is all about easy listening; lying in bed with fresh cup of coffee and this a playlist of perfectly chilled tunes.

In the Dark

by Neil Thornton No Comments

I always used to wear black. Total black. All black everything. You get the idea. It’s only been in the last 3-2 years that it stopped, and now I’m at the point where wearing any more than one piece of black clothing makes me feel odd. I like to wear colour, or brighter at least.

But I’d never really properly associated how much my clothes went with how I was feeling. I wore black because I never had the confidence to wear anything else. Black is mysterious yet not quiet and non assuming. It doesn’t scream for attention yet it can command authority. Recently, a friend actually turned round to me and said, “Is everything OK? I noticed you’ve been wearing a lot of black again recently.” I actually laughed at first. But as we continued talking I realised how true it was. Work have been super stressful and with both my mum and granddad being sick in hospital I’d reverted back to darker style. One that I thought didn’t show my emotions as it was non-descriptive. My look had become more comfortable, more sports-inspired. I was always on the run, but I wasn’t sure if it was towards something, or away from it.

I had the chance to shoot with the awesome Sitakesphotos again recently as we captured the essence of how I was feeling. My friend Nick nailed it by saying it had a Kidulthood, angst vibe to it. In an underground car park in London, we mapped out the stress, the confusion and angst I was carrying around with me. It was a really interesting shoot, trying different poses and looking for a finish that felt more out of a movie clip.
