Can you detox your way to healthy skin in just 28 days? MEG 21 says you can.

The festive season is one of indulgence, we all know that. Even the most saintly amongst loosen the reins and allow ourselves to partake in a little holiday madness. But the access food and drink, especially sugars, as well as the increased late nights partying can take its toll on your skin. With the new year right around the corner, it’s that time again when everyone starts to think about cleaning up their act.

Sugar not only has negative affects on your body and your waistline, but it also attacks collagen and elastin in your skin, leading to (queue scinece-y words) glycation, inflammation and oxidative stress. Glycation, a wonderful buzzword in the skincare world, is where sugar molecules attach to, and damage, protein cells (collagen and elastin). This causes advanced ageing of the skin. Inflammation as you might have guessed is the puffiness and redness so many of us suffer from, and oxidative stress is the inability in the usual biological system for your body to detoxify and repair itself this speeding up the ageing process.

So what can you do to help prevent all this unwanted ageing? Well, the first and most obvious one is to cut down on sugar as much as possible. But MEG 21 is also on hand to help…

Founded in the US, MEG 21 discovered a unique compound, branded as Supplamine, during a diabetes rial in Philadelphia, that is scientifically proven to block the effects of toxic sugar on your skin. YEY!

Across seven independent studies, Supplamine improved fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity, hydration and skin tone in just 28 days.

So I put it to the test.

After discussing my skin type with MEG 21, I was given a three-pronged arsenal for my 28-day challenge.

Up first was the Antioxidant Boost - key to preventing sunspots, wrinkles and sagging skin. I applied this every morning as an extra layer of protection against the pollutants you come across every day. The booster is a super lightweight serum and has a silky texture to it. It applies smoothly and doesn’t feel too greasy.

Then I was told to add a daily exfoliant to routine. “But you can’t exfoliate that much!”, I hear you cry. Have no fear! Yes, a tougher, more manual exfoliation is only warranted 2-3 times a week to avoid over-stripping and damaging your skin, but a light, no abrasive exfoliant can be applied daily. Applied with cotton pads, MEG 21’s Moisturising Toner contains fruit acids that gently exfoliate the skin, leaving it feeling fresh and helping to rid dull skin cells and to help clear pores.
The final product, and the back bone of the routine is the MEG 21 Face Treatment - the signature product and where the brand started. I used this as my evening moisturiser at first as it’s a lot richer than the Antioxidant Boost and sits on the skin longer. So it felt more comfortable leaving it on to sleep than in the morning. As my skin got used to it I applied it on alternative mornings too, and on weekend when I wasn’t dashing about. One thing I loved about the Face Treatment was its clever applicator - you push down on it, getting the perfect amount of product, swipe it off and apply. Genius.
So how did I get on?

It definitely takes a few days to get into the routine; a few hazy mornings where I rushed to work and forgot to apply the products mean’t I was at day 5 before I really got going. But once you pay attention it becomes second nature.

I really liked the MEG 21 products. Once I was into the routine it didn’t take long to start seeing the effects. I did also consciously try to lower my sugar intake just to give it a fighting chance, which helped. I think the key to this system, as well as skincare in general, and what makes it great is how it helps promote consistency. I do believe that any set of products, whether supermarket or high-end can help your skin, but it’s about consistency and using the right products for the right issue.

By about day 15 one of the key things I was noticing was the difference in my skin when I woke up. It didn’t look tired or drawn. At all. I’d be up at 5:30-6am and head to the gym and I’d get comments on how I was looking so fresh so early. My skin felt more supple and had more life to it - ‘colour in my cheeks’ as it were.

While it may not be the most fabulous of brand names, MEG 21 is a great system of products. From ease of use to the overall effect, it’s a great way to take care of your skin alongside a balanced lifestyle. I didn’t see much effect on the red areas of my skin - I have mild rosacea so it’s not standard redness so I wasn’t expecting to really, but overall the suppleness and elasticity of my skin greatly improved. It’s worth your consideration if your struggling to find a system that works for you.
