With nearly 30 years experience in the industry, having always focused on men’s hairdressing and styled the likes of royalty, it’s safe to say Kerry Hayden knows a thing or two about what hairstyles maketh the man.
Sitting firmly at the top of her game, Kerry works for London-based salon, Atherton Cox, as well as passing on her skills to the next generation at the Wella Academy to a national and international audience. Kerry also works as part of the British men’s team, headed up by über-session stylist Guido Palau, at both Milan and Paris Fashion Week. Here, Kerry and the team layout, in the same way the clothes do, the hottest looks that will be gracing gents heads in the coming season.
Kerry has been kind enough to give me an exclusive insight to the hair styles and choice made behind some of the shows she worked on, and I’m sharing it all with you!
Fashion Week
KH: I kick off the Men’s Fashion Week season at London Collections: Men with Alexander McQueen on the 8th Jan, then onto Milan and Paris to work on a total of 11 shows.
There was an eclectic mix of styles, reflecting the many faces of the British male today. The hair equally played its part in the flamboyant stories of the clothes.

At Alexander McQueen we cut the hair very short at the sides and back and dressed the hair into 1920s Marcel waves to complement Sarah Burton’s smoking jackets and exquisite Savile Row tailoring.

Raf Simons
We had great fun creating the look for the Raff Simons show in Paris where the hair looked like lattice plywood, which worked well with Raf’s eccentric, playful clothes.

Movement and texture also featured in the finished looks. With Versace and Louis Vuitton, the hair was playful and sexy and very easy for my clients to re-create themselves.

Overall, the hair at the shows we worked on was still short at the back and sides and there were still plenty of side partings with slight height at the front. It’s an indication that hair for my clients still remains as groomed and as sharp as it has done for the last couple of years.
My clients will add their own personality to the finished look. The British male today has the technique and the confidence in delivering their own unique style.

It was at one of the Wella sessions that I met Kerry – me, the model up on the chopping block that day and Kerry, the fun bubbly stylist with the vibrant red hair who dutifully informed me that she was to shave off my bushy, curly fro of a barnet. Queue nerves, queue excitement.
Nearly four years on and Kerry is the only person who touches my head. Be it as a model for Wella or when I go to Atherton Cox in Marylebone to see her, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Her skill, persona and all-over professionalism is incredible, she has taught me so much about hair care, style and maintenance as well as, I am lucky to say, becoming a good friend. I trust her completely and over the years my hair has seen some amazing styles and colours!
