Sayer’s Croft Activity Centre

April 11, 2011 by Neil Thornton No Comments

I was volunteering at SC in ‘09, it is an activity camp which we took a group of adults with varying forms of learning and physical disabilities to for a week.

The centre had many amazing accessible activities including, abseiling, rock climbing, archery and more. On the day we were rock climbing I decided it would be a perfect opportunity for some pictures (having recently purchased my first DLSR I was desperate to use it!). After taking a few shots from the ground I decided to be more adventurous.  I went to the top of the tower with the instructor and had my self harnessed to the tower. I then proceeded to hang myself over the top of the tower and float in mid air. From there I had the perfect position to take some really great shots. I am so happy with how they came out.

The joy on the faces of these women really touched me, and what’s more is that if I hadn’t gone to the top of the tower we would have never seen their joy from underneath.

It puts the exact reason I love photography right there for all to see, the ability of catching such incredible moments in a single frame, forever remembered.

Cities Project

by Neil Thornton No Comments

These are some of my favourite photos out of my body of work. This is my ‘Cities’ project which I did for myself, as I wanted some photography in my room. So I decided I would use pictures that represented my favourite places that I have been fortunate enough to travel to.

The choice to have them all on black and white stemmed from the photo of the Eiffel Tower. The photo was taken from the top of the Sacre-Coeur and after uploading them onto the computer I instantly felt this vintage feel to the picture and the need to play with the shadows. I tried sepia and warmer tones but black and white gives the picture a strength which I like, so I decided that the whole project would be in black and white. The only one I am going to re work on is the Sydney picture, Its too over done around the edges with the glow making it a bit over bearing. What do you think?

I am so lucky to have been able to spend time in these places. I have never been one to simply go on a ‘sun’ holiday, having always preferred to go somewhere where I can immerse myself in a different lifestyle, and experience things not available in the UK (though I suppose the sun technically falls under that bracket!).
